History Newsletter

 


 The Iowan History Letter is an independent online magazine, and produced as a keepsake journal for Battleship Iowa museum volunteers, former crewmen of USS Iowa, and for our readers. The Iowan History Letter is not sold, subscriptions are not offered, and all credited photos, cartoons and stories are the sole property of their authors.

          Wherever possible, The Iowan History Letter requests permission, properly credits, and identifies the source of photographs, stories, or quotations. If crediting errors, or any possible copyright infringements are found, please let us know and corrections will be made

A North Carolina native, born in Sylva, NC, and raised in Shelby, NC.  Received a Bachelor’s degree in Television Production at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.  Later earned two Master’s degrees, one in Human Resources Development and the second Management. Was also in the NROTC.  After graduation from Chapel Hill, was commissioned an Ensign, USN.  During naval career was stationed aboard several ships including USS Cochrane (DDG-21) and USS Iowa (BB-61).  Final duty station at Naval Station, Mayport, Florida.  Retired in 1994.  Entered the nonprofit arena, first, as PAO and later Director of the Angel Hospital Foundation.  Went on to be a fundraiser for Pfeiffer University, the Chemical Dependency Center, Care Ring, and Hope Haven.  Became the Executive Director of Samaritan House in 2007.  Have been on the board of several organizations, from the Beaches Chamber of Commerce in Atlantic Beach, FL, to the Establishing Board of the Matthews Presbyterian Preschool.  Have been a local Scoutmaster and am currently the President of the Dillworth South End Rotary.

I am also an author.  Writing under the name Hunter Goforth (my real first name) I have written five books which are available on Amazon Kindle.  Two of them involve the battleship Iowa and her crew.  The two books are “Tempered Steel” and “Sending Messages.”
